Mijn leesclub nadert haar vijftigste titel - en aan mij de eer om deze te kiezen. Het aantal vrouwelijke auteurs is in de afgelopen 12,5 jaar blijven steken op het beschamende aantal van... 7. Dat is nog een magerder score dan de verhouding man/vrouw in door kranten gerecenseerde boeken. Arjen Fortuin bijvoorbeeld besprak 10 vrouwelijke auteurs op 51 gerecenseerde titels in 2011 en 2012 samen. Alle reden dus om de score op de valreep wat op te krikken.













Het meest voor de hand ligt de AKO Literatuurprijswinnares van 2011 Marente de Moor. Esther Gerritsen, de enige vrouw op de shortlist van de Libris Literatuurprijs 2011 moeten we ook niet vergeten. Alleen naar geen van twee ben ik erg nieuwsgierig. Hanna Bervoets won dit jaar de Opzij Literatuurprijs met Lieve Céline. Een dapper experiment om als hoogbegaafde auteur de wereld vanuit een laagbegaafd personage te beschrijven zonder in denigrerende stereotypen te vervallen. Hierin is Bervoets, getuige de recensies, ook niet geslaagd. Haar laatste Alles wat er was dan? Een mix tussen Goldings Lord of the flies en de mijnscène uit Alleen op de wereld. Maar kan ik dan niet beter kijken naar het echte Wie is de Mol? 

De prijs wordt al sinds 1979 uitgereikt, tot 2008 onder de naam Anne Romeinprijs. Eerdere winnaars van de prijs van het blad van de vrouw-die-ertoe-doet, waren onder meer Hella Haasse, Marga Minco, Renate Dorrestein, Mensje van Keulen en Helga Ruebsamen, Doeschka Meijsing en Jessica Durlacher. Wáár zijn Charlotte Mutsaers, Monica van Paemel, Anna Enquist, Nelleke Noordervliet, Rascha Peper, Tessa de Loo en Connie Palmen?

Bevindt zich onder deze namen de schrijfster van ons jubilerende boek of moet ik weg van het hier & nu en zoeken in het ver & vroeger? Mercè Rodoreda bijvoorbeeld, of Anna Blaman?

Aan jullie de vraag: wat was het beste boek van een vrouw dat je gelezen hebt? Help mij om ons jubilieum onvergetelijk te maken en tegelijk de vrouw als auteur, uit het Nederlands taalgebied of daarbuiten, weer serieus te laten meetellen.

Gerrit Komrij 1944 - 2012

Deze foto maakte ik in 1994 voor bij een interview met hem voor het faculteitsblad Babel. Aanvankelijk binnen, in hotel Ambassade, vroeg ik hem om een wenkbrauwhaar glad te strijken die ergerlijk voor zijn oog hing. "Ruk hem er maar uit!" was zijn reactie. Daarna voor wat meer licht ook de Herengracht opgestapt.
Later kwamen we elkaar weer tegen bij de presentatie van De Klopgeest in Felix Meritus. De interviewer, Ward Wijndelts, herinnerde hij zich als 'die mooie jongen', mij als 'de kleindochter van schilder Theo Kurpershoek'. Het portret heb ik zelf een keer gescand om zijn kale lemma op Wikipedia mee te illustreren. Sinds 2010 was het zijn vaste profielfoto op Facebook.

Natuur vogelvrij met nieuwe 'Natuur'-wet!

Staatssecretaris Henk Bleker is van plan voorjaar 2012 een nieuwe natuurwet in te dienen bij de Tweede Kamer die de bestaande natuurbeschermingswetten (de Flora en- faunawet, de Natuurbeschermingswet en de Boswet) moet vervangen. Doel van de vereenvoudiging is 'de Nederlandse natuurbescherming in lijn te brengen met Europa' en 'regeldruk voor burgers en bedrijven te verminderen' (lees: versoepelen) en 'om onnodige belemmeringen voor economische en ruimtelijke ontwikkelingen op te heffen' (lees: afschaffen). Blekers voorstellen voor:

Natuurgebieden. Gebieden die niet onder Europese regels vallen plus alle 66 natuurmonumenten (3.465 hectare) worden niet langer beschermd door het Rijk.

Jacht. Door de nieuwe wet kan op veel meer diersoorten gejaagd worden zonder vergunning. Nu is de jacht vrij op wilde eend, fazant, haas, konijn en houtduif; straks ook op de grauwe gans, kolgans, smient, damhert, edelhert, ree en wild zwijn.

Beschermde soorten. Met de nieuwe wet verliezen veel diersoorten (onder andere das, zeehond en diverse vlinders) en plantensoorten (waaronder parnassia en orchideeën) hun bescherming. Dus ook planten en dieren die nu op de rode lijsten staan en dus ernstig bedreigd zijn.

Word jij hier ook verschikkelijk boos van? De overheid biedt de mogelijkheid om bezwaar te maken via Internetconsulatie - Natuurwet.

Georgische monarchie gered!

Deze week werd in Madrid de eerste erfgenaam van prins David en prinses Anna van Georgië geboren. De kleine prins Giorgi Bagrationi verenigt in zijn persoon twee clans die aanspraak maken op de Georgische troon.

Sinds de middeleeuwen werd het Koninkrijk Georgië geregeerd door de Bagrationi dynastie. Deze heerschappij eindigde met de inlijving van Georgië bij het Russische Rijk begin 19e eeuw. Wie niet vluchtte, werd vermoord of verbannnen naar een Sovjet-concentratiekamp. Verschillende clans leven tot op de dag van vandaag in ballingschap, kibbelend over wie de wettige troonopvolger is.


Vanaf de 8e eeuw breidde het Georgische koninkrijk uit onder bestuur van de Bagrationi-dynastie. Het rijk bereikte haar politieke hoogtepunt onder koningin Tamara (1184 - 1213) toen het zich uitstrekte van Oost-Turkije tot Azerbeidzjan.

Sinds de onafhankelijkheid van de Sovjet Unie in 1991 gaan stemmen op om de monarchie nieuw leven in te blazen. De nationalisten zagen het als een strategische zet om Moskou ervan te weerhouden Georgië terug te veroveren. Anderen zagen in het herinstalleren van een koninklijke familie vooral als intern tegenwicht om de autoritiaire neigingen van de eerste lichting Georgische presidenten, zoals Gamsachoerdia, te beteugelen. Verenigd in de pro-royalisten bezocht een delegatie Jorge de Bagration, hoofd van het Koninklijk Huis van Georgië, in zijn woonplaats Madrid om hem te proberen ervan te overtuigen terug te keren naar zijn vaderland. De autocoureur liet zich echter niet overhalen. Na het tijdperk Shevernadze heropende in 2007 de Georgisch-Orthodoxe Kerk het debat; patriarch Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II zei namens het Georgische volk te spreken in zijn wens de monarchie te herstellen. In een reactie zei President Mikheil Saakashvili dat Georgië 'op moet passen geen nieuwe problemen toe te voegen aan de reeds bestaande'.

Prins Giorgi (1944 – 2008), zoon van de gevluchte Georgische prins Irakli Bagration-Mukhraneli. Prince Davit Bagrationi-Mukhraneli werd in 1976 geboren uit het huwelijk van deze autocoureur met de Spaanse prinses Doña María de las Mercedes de Zornoza y Ponce de León.

Als er al overeenstemming was geweest over het instellen van een constitutionele monarchie in Georgië, dan was nog altijd onduidelijk welke van de dynastieke nazaten het ambt zouden mogen bekleden; zowel de Gruzinski's als de inmiddels gerepatrieerde Mukhrani's gaan in ononderbroken, mannelijke lijn af van Constantijn II van Georgië die regeerde tot 1505. Met het huwelijk tussen Prins David Bagrationi-Mukhraneli en Prinses Anna Bagration-Gruzinsky hebben de Georgische royals dus in gezamenlijkheid een einde gemaakt aan de discussie over de troonopvolging. De geboorte van de kleine Giorgi is dan ook de belichaming van de strategie.

Een modern sprookje? Eerder typisch middeleeuwse familiepolitiek gericht op legitieme controle van de macht en vreedzame gebiedsuitbreiding. Henry VIII was er niets bij, als je de Georgische minister van Binnenlandse Zaken Vano Merabishvili mag geloven. Een jaar na de bruiloft van het prinselijk paar vertelde hij aan een Russische krant dat Prinses Anna gedwongen was van haar eerste echtgenoot te scheiden om met Prins David te kunnen trouwen en zo de Georgische monarchie te redden, maar dat het gearrangeerde huwelijk het eerste jaar niet had overleefd. Het koppel was volgens hem vervolgens op vakantie gestuurd Venezuela; wat nu dus zijn vruchten heeft afgeworpen in de vorm van een mannelijke troonopvolger van een koning zonder troon, opgevoed door een autocoureur, het Georgisch niet machtig, met een onwillige echtgenote. Een moderne nachtmerrie als je het mij vraagt.

Kurpershoeks kinderkopjes

Op de kinderzegels voor 1953 beeldde ontwerper Theo Kurpershoek zijn kinderen af, waaronder mijn moeder. Dat gaf me een rel; je portret op een postzegel was voorbehouden aan leden van het Koninklijk Huis. Kennelijk vond Juliana het toch een sympathiek idee want het ontwerp werd goedgekeurd en Kurpershoek kreeg een lintje.

Op vrijdag 16 september vindt de presentatie plaats van de postzegelontwerpen van Kurpershoek, met wie weet nog meer sappige details.

Suikerwerkrestauratie

Ooit, toen ik eens twijfels had over het beroepsperspectief na de studie Nederlands, heb ik de opleiding papier- en boekrestauratie overwogen. Het is er niet van gekomen, mede doordat ik het gewoonweg te druk kreeg met de redactie van het faculteitsblad en andere o zo nuttige extracurriculaire activiteiten. Maar wie weet hoe mijn toekomst eruit had gezien als ik toen gehoord had van suikerwerkrestauratie...

Na een kort ziekbed is overleden mijn dierbare vader, letter-tekenaar, illustrator en wandelende encyclopedie, Boudewijn Ietswaart.

As a designer of book covers for the Fondo de Cultura Económica and the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) his work for the UNESCO spans more than 50 titles.
Typographers of the Círculo de Tipógrafos have converted Ietswaart's unique letter designs into a series of digital fonts. As each cover contains only a limited number of characters, Ietswaart, now 72, was actively involved in the 'reconstruction' of an alphabet that never existed. He made suggestions about the letter designs send to him by email as pdf, and sent a print back to Mexico by mail. The result of this artistic cooperation is now available to all who wish to combine a highly original approach to classic lettering with a retro look and feel.

The ornamental painting of residential interiors in Bukhara, Uzbekistan, is the subject of great restoration activity. The work is carried out by skilled house owners or in commission. The results vary between conservation work with respect for the previous layers and rigorous reconstructions with a new interpretation on the basis of traditional elements. Alternatively, Bukharian citizens invest in an interior renewal in what they call ‘Euro-Style’.
In my research I looked at the reasons for the revival of this traditional style and how this relates to the relative short independence of the Uzbek state. Funds coming in from abroad, milder legislation and ‘a new identity’ are reasons given for the restorations. With a national identity narrative that people do not identify with, house owners have an interest in promoting the narrative of ‘guarding our own culture before it is lost’. This is especially true for the men as they feel responsible for their family lineage which is connected to the care for the house.

Sardine motivation

Every time I'm fed up reading and writing essays when outside the sun is out and London calls, I look at this picture and imagine what it must be like. And whoosh, I'm back on track!


Lela Anderson fills cans with sardine steaks at the Stinson sardine cannery in Gouldsboro, Maine. Anderson has worked at the cannery for 54 years. The cannery, the last of its kind in the U.S., will shut down this week.

British Museum warning!

I should start by saying that this warning is for anyone planning to visit the British Museum, but maybe even more so for those visiting with me. Suppose you have a long weekend, perhaps 5 days in London. Somewhere in your program there may be a little time for a visit to the BM. Don't underestimate its vastness in relation to the stamina of your curiosity.

As my university is located around the corner of the museum, and there is no entrance fee, I'm in the fortunate circumstance that I can return for short strolls in preferred galleries, avoiding museum fatigue and information overload. For my latest visit I planned to 'do' one room, 56, in one hour, covering Mesopotamia from 6000 - 1500 BC, thus leaving 1500 - 539 BC and Anatolia, Iran, Arabia, the Levant (rooms 52-59, 6, 9, 10a-c, 89, B, I, G, Z) for future high quality breaks.

The result; Woolley's finds at the Royal Graves of Ur, current southern Iraq, making up only one third of room 56, took both my lunchtime and breath away.

Fietsen in Londen: Suggestions for improvement

'Gaat dat 'n beetje, fietsen in Londen?' wordt mij regelmatig gevraagd. 'Matig', antwoord ik dan, het midden zoekend tussen 'prima' voor het eerste deel van mijn route en 'hopeloos' voor deel twee door het centrum.

Mijn top 5 voor Verbetering Vatbaar:

1. geen fietspaden (of ze houden ineens op)
2. éénrichtingsverkeer (wil je rechtsaf/rechtdoor, móet je linksaf)
3. moeten uitwijken voor dikke niet-parkeren markering
4. in het park is fietsen verboden (behalve op de autoweg)
5. uitstekend OV (krankzinnig veel bussen en haltes dus steeds achter de bus wachten of eromheen)

(No) Intelligent design in Staphorst

Let me start by saying that what you are about to read is a rendition of a discussion taking place in the Netherlands in 2010. Common Era. In the predominantly Christian village of Staphorst the provisional map of area's with archaeological value gave rise to commotion in the city counsil. The report mentions area's of archaeological and geological age that, according to the town counsil, are before the creation and therefor cannot exist. The Christian parties demand a Biblical perspective on the creation of the earth to be added.

Archaeological maps are legally mandatory for municipalities in the Netherlands so archaeological data can be taken into account when planning development. After the presentation of the map, alderman Sytse de Jong of the Reformed Political Party (SGP), responsible for the assignment of the map, noted that 'the municipality finances the report and therefore deserved to contain the Biblical view adhered to by a large part of the voters of Staphorst'. He proposed that 'the final report should at least start with a passage about the creation'. The consultant of the archaeological consultancy BAAC replied that he has 'a scientific background and cannot ignore evidence indicating an age of tens of thousands of years. However 'unusual', BAAC is going to add the requested foreword.

Foreword
BAAC agreed to add a foreword to the Archaeological Map of Staphorst. It states that 'the text is intended as an introduction and forms as such not a part of the scientific content of the report. The report is therefore not scientifically adjusted.'

This Archaeological Forecast Maps and the explanatory report to the municipality Staphorst are established on the basis of scientifically proven facts, theories and interpretations. For the dating of sites in the map and the classification of archaeological periods BAAC uses the common scientific basis of an Earth that is billions of years old, based on radiometric dating of rocks.
The city of Staphorst states in this regard that a majority of the council does not share this point of view, because of their religion and their interpretation of the Bible. This interpretation of a young Earth is based in creationism. Duly noted.

Prayer
Alderman De Jong expects no problems for the practise of archaeological research. 'Practical problems need not arise', he stated, when combining a biblical view on the history of the area with the scientific archaeological map. 'We could for instance examine how Staphorst has changed location several times. This goes back perhaps 1400 years, so about that period there is no dispute.' It makes you wonder, however, how Staphorster archaeologists are supposed to deal with finds older than 4000 BC. Presumably, when hitting on these layers, they pray for elections.

Experience Prehistory
Amateur archaeologists in Staphorst continue to excavate in the area and educate children the principles of archaeological fieldwork. In 2008 the exhibition Experience Prehistory took place in a local centre for nature and history. The finds included the Palaeolithic awl and Neolithic macehead shown above. Prior to this exhibition, the awl had been on display in the town hall of Staphorst. An information panel of the Dutch Tourism Board proudly points the way to where it was found.

Besteed je tijd nuttig: stem!

The National Trust houdt een fotowedstrijd met als thema 'Time well spent'. Met andere woorden; ze zoeken zonnige plaatjes van geïnteresseerde bezoekers bij een van de 700 National Trust-sites. Vijf professionele fotografen gaven vast hun visie op het onderwerp:

Amsterdamse wallen op tournee

Welke Amsterdamse scholier herinnert zich niet de 'museumles' in het Stedelijk? Hoogepunt was voor mij het bezoek aan The Beanery van Kienholz (inclusief kroeglucht!), ook wel het 'klokkencafé'. Twintig jaar later heeft dezelfde kunstenaar een bijzonder stukje Amsterdam nagebouwd: de wallen. Ook deze huizen van plezier worden bevolkt door bevroren figuren met druipende lakklodders; de gezichten van de dames zien we door het glas van koekdozen. De mini-vitrines verbeelden het lekkers dat ze in de etalage zetten en tegelijk de vrijheid te kussen wie zij willen.
Nu de echte kamertjes stuk voor stuk veranderen in designschoenateliers, combineert the National Gallery in London de tentoonstelling van Hoerengracht met een aantal frivole voorstellingen van Hollandse meesters. Conservator Colin Wiggins, ziet 'some striking similarities', bijvoorbeeld tussen de vrouw aan de pianola van Vermeer en Jutta in Hoerengracht, 'who stands next to her telephone, looking at us in a confrontational pose as she waits for the next customer to call.'
Ach, ik heb slechtere smoezen gehoord om naar de wallen te gaan.

Fietsen in Londen: Helmet hair

Ik wist niet dat ik het nodig had, maar Bike Belles biedt:



Doe mij maar wat nuttige tips voor fietsen in Londen. What to wear :

• Wrap up warm if it's a cold day, paying particular attention to a good pair of gloves to keep your hands warm.
• On hot summer days, wear a vest or t-shirt under your clothes in case you get sweaty. You can remove it once you arrive at your destination, leaving your clothes clean and dry.
• For short skirts, wear tights to keep your modesty intact.

Schattig, maar weinig nieuws. Mischien kan ik nog iets kan leren van de Beauty tips:

• Use waterproof mascara when it's raining.
• Helmet hair can be an issue. If you have long hair, you can simply tie it up into a bun and tuck it into your helmet.
• Take a comb or brush to revive your style when you reach your destination.

Mijn tip: geen helm. Die draagt de Bike Belle op de foto ook niet trouwens. Op rustige wegen is het nergens voor nodig. Behalve natuurlijk als je een statement wilt maken.
